
KIEV, July 17, 2025 – In a significant wartime change, Ukraine’s parliament has officially appointed Yulia Anatolyevna Sviridenko (born December 25, 1985) as the new prime minister.
The vote took place this morning, after parliament voted to sack long-serving Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on July 16.
Voting and political context
A total of 262 MPs supported the decision, while 22 voted against and 26 abstained.
Shmyhal, who has held the position since March 2020 and is the longest-serving prime minister in Ukraine’s history, will now take on the role of defense minister, where he will oversee defense and domestic weapons production.
Who is Yulia Sviridenko ?

Sviridenko, 39, hails from Chernihiv and graduated with honors from Kyiv National University, as well as completing postgraduate training.
Her professional life has focused on regional economic development, and she has served as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Trade since November 2021.
She has played a key role in finalizing critical minerals and rare earths agreements between Ukraine and the US, even leading a delegation to Washington in April 2025.
🎯 Her Agenda
As prime minister, Sviridenko is expected to focus on:
1. Defense and economic resilience simplifying bureaucracy, increasing domestic weapons production, and reallocating resources to the war effort and reconstruction.
2. Strengthening relations with the United States – using his negotiating experience to gain and expand support from the Trump administration and other international allies.
3. Economic renewal and deregulation implementing pro-business initiatives, cutting unnecessary spending, and increasing social support for citizens.
Major cabinet reshuffle:
The government is undergoing reorganization: ministries such as economy, ecology and agriculture are set to be merged, and key figures such as Mykhailo Fedorov, Taras Kachka and Svitlana Hrynchuk will take on new deputy ministerial and ministerial positions.
These changes are taking place as part of a strategic shift aimed at increasing domestic military production to 50% of Ukraine’s arsenal.
