NEW DELHI |INDIA | TODAY
In a surprise move, India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday citing health issues. The decision came as many in the political world were shocked when the Parliament debate session began just hours earlier.
Dhankhar steps down: “Need to prioritise my health”
In his resignation letter to President Draupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said:
“ To prioritize health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice-President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
With this letter, his nearly three-year tenure as Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Parliament) came to an abrupt end.
What is Article 67 (a) of the Indian Constitution ?
Article 67(a) gives the Vice President of India the right to resign at any time by writing a letter to the President. Once the resignation is accepted, the post becomes vacant and the constitutional process of electing a new Vice President begins within six months.
Was It Really Just About Health ?
While the official explanation revolved around health issues, some political figures have been skeptical about the timing and possible underlying motives.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to X (formerly Twitter) to suggest, “There’s more to it than meets the eye.”
Political analysts say that Dhankhar had called an important meeting of the working advisory committee a day before. If he was really unwell, then why did he take this step?
This has led to speculation about possible internal political tensions or personal differences with the government leadership.
